Fulton Limited has supplied an oil-fired, 60J vertical steam boiler to family-owned Westcountry Smokehouses, an established producer of fine cured and smoked foods. The company, which takes great care in sourcing fresh fish and the finest poultry, has won numerous awards to make it the most highly decorated smokehouse in the UK.

Having secured a contract to supply cooked duck, fish and ready meals for a supermarket chain, Westcountry upgraded its facility by installing a second processing line and, based on its experience from the first line, again chose steam for the cooking process.

Given the increased demand from the existing line and the new line, Westcountry decided to replace its current electric steam boiler with one that would not only cope with currents demands, but also future-proof the company against further production increases.

Says Westcountry’s factory engineer Jeff Peters: “We were already using a Fulton electric flash steam boiler, which had worked without issue since it was installed. We therefore had no hesitation in approaching them for this facility upgrade. Their knowledge of steam boiler installations is second to none and they are also relatively local to the Dartmouth facility.”

Following a meeting and site survey with Fulton’s area manager Andy Elverd, an oil-fired 60J vertical steam boiler was specified and is now providing steam for the existing processing line, and new ovens and vat on the new cooking line. For the new line, steam from the 60J boiler is used to heat the vat in which sauces are being cooked for use in supermarket ready meals. Steam is also being used for both new ovens, which are dedicated to cooking either poultry or fish.

Fulton’s renowned ‘J’ Series vertical gas- and oil-fired steam boilers include eight models covering outputs from 96 to 960 kg/h. Their tubeless design, invented by Fulton, eliminates the coils and tubes traditionally used in steam raising plant and enables the Series ‘J’ to raise its full steam output in just

20 minutes. The simple design, top quality materials and robust construction make them ideal for arduous applications in a wide range of industries, including food processing.

The Series ‘J’ range is manufactured to BS 2790 1992 Class 1 and meets all relevant European and British Standards. Pressure vessels are covered by a five-year warranty and each boiler is fully tested prior to delivery, commissioned by Fulton engineers where appropriate and backed by Fulton’s nationwide service and spares operation.
