Olympians celebrate with a BBQ

Members of Britain’s heroic cycling team celebrated their success at the London Olympic Games with some delicious Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef.

Geraint Thomas, winner of a gold medal in the Team Pursuit event at the Velodrome, hosted a BBQ for members of the cycling team to celebrate a successful event.

Geraint, who is the Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef Sports Ambassador, was joined by other gold medal winners including Britain’s all time leading Olympic Gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy (gold in the men’s team sprint and gold in the keirin), Dani King (gold in the women’s team pursuit), Ed Clancy (gold in the men’s team pursuit and bronze in the men’s omnium), and Steven Burke (gold in the men’s team pursuit).

Geraint said “I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than having a BBQ with some of my fellow team mates and I would like to thank Meat Promotion Wales for supporting us with some delicious Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef.”

Welsh Lamb is encouraging barbequers to remain undeterred by the downpours, get out in the garden and step things up a notch to impress their guests. Whilst sausages are a staple ingredient of any BBQ, Welsh Lamb is challenging the nation to be as adventurous in the garden as they might be in the kitchen and get some gourmet buddies for their bangers.

What better way to go gourmet than to serve up some delicious Welsh Lamb? Tender and succulent and guaranteed to tickle the taste buds, Welsh Lamb is an easy to cook BBQ meat, and a firm favourite with TV chefs such as Simon Henbery. Follow his top tips to achieve that mouthwatering moment and BBQ perfection:

Simon Henbery, head chef at Chelsea Brasserie & Bar

  • Marinade your meats for 24 hours before putting on the BBQ
  • Make sure the BBQ is red hot and that the coals are going white
  • Move the grills away from the coals a little and allow for a slower, more gentle cook. Colour is not always flavour!
  • Try some slower cuts like Welsh Lamb shoulder with the bone out and cooked long and slow over the coals

Welsh Lamb is famous for its quality and heritage, and is reared using methods developed by generations of Welsh farmers to create a mouth watering meat that is perfect for a wide variety of quick and easy dishes. With a unique heritage, character and reputation, it is recognised by the European Commission and has been awarded the coveted status of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) that protects the names of selected regional foods.
