Daily Bread was set up in 1986 by people with an obsession for good food, harnessing the entrepreneurial spirit, passion and 24 plus years of experience that built the daily bread business and refining into fresh, best in the market food to go solutions.

Daily Bread is a part of The Hain Celestial Group, a leading natural and organic food and personal care products company in North America and Europe. Hain Celestial is a leader in almost all natural food categories with well-known brands across all countries with a worldwide turnover in excess of $1bn.

According to Daily Bread’s Head of Sales, David Singh, “The idea behind the company was to deliver really good sandwiches to offices, airlines and institutions – approximately 55 million sandwiches later we are still learning, but we reckon that we have a pretty good handle on it. We are the only sandwich manufacturer to be awarded the Queen’s Royal Warrant, and have supplied Buckingham Palace as well as other top institutions and organizations in London for many years.”

New Bread is based in Luton with a manufacturing site that employs 500 people. This is a chilled food-producing unit with 85,000ft2 of floor space. Production is carried out on a two-shift basis and David says, “We have a static workforce and have built a good reputation in the area as an employer. Furthermore, we have extensive food manufacturing experience at all levels across the site, in product development, management and in operations. We have developed our own in-house training with our own learning academy on-site in order to ensure that all of our staff are trained to the highest level of skill and professionalism.”

The company also has operations at two other sites in the UK. There is a factory at Fakenham in Norfolk, producing frozen, meat-free products and desserts for the Linda McCartney brand, together with some other own-name brands, while in Manchester there is a plant offering grocery products, both imported and from the company’s own on-site soya milk dairy.

Daily Bread currently has a distribution network that delivers daily to most major cities 7 days a week, as well as coverage across most areas of the UK. All vehicles are fitted with an onboard data tracking system, which always keeps the company in touch with where all the orders are; in addition, regularly calibrated refrigeration units ensure that all products reach their customers in perfect condition, every time.

Looking at the product ranges, David adds, “We are very focused on making all our sandwiches great, and have developed our own unique fillings which we taste daily to ensure that they are consistently excellent. We are also highly focused on sustainability and so our ‘Classic’ range of sandwiches is packed in plain black recyclable cardboard skillets. Our range also includes some delicious Premium sandwiches, including rare roast beef with sweet caramelized onion, with horseradish and crunchy watercress on onion bread. The Premium range is also packed in cardboard packaging with a PE (polyethylene) window, both of which are 100% recyclable.”

Daily Bread is accredited to BRC Grade A and to ISO 14001. It has featured in The Sunday Times Best Green Company Top 10 for 3 years running, where it is the largest greenest food producer to qualify in 2008, 2009 and 2010. It holds the EEF Regional Environmental Award and the Green Business Award.

In the area of sustainability, Daily Bread has won the CIWM Environmental Excellence Award for its Recycling Performance – the Company currently recycles 90% of its food waste. This waste is currently sent to a bioprocessing plant in Bedford where it is used to generate electricity for the National Grid. Daily Bread, however, is looking at installing its own unit to avoid the additional transport.
