Based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Thompson Transport first opened its doors for business in 1974, the same year that the National Union of Mineworkers began an all-out strike and, on a lighter note, Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles hit the big screen: indeed, for husband and wife team Alan and Sheila Thompson it was the beginning of an adventure that saw them build and develop what is today one of the most respected in the frozen food distribution industry.

With a farming background, Alan began by delivering potatoes to the wholesale markets. This was followed by a chance foray into frozen food distribution at a later date, which led to the beginning of Thompson Transport as we know it today. Sheila was no stranger to the transport business either. Her father, Emanuel Mason, was a director of the Rotherham-based Mason Bros, with a fleet of around 100 trucks, serving the then booming steel industry around Sheffield.

Moreover, with the introduction of both of their sons into the business in the early 1980s, Thompson Transport began to grow into the modern distribution fleet now being operated.

Still run as a family concern, with the partners being very much hands-on and available to discuss requirements at any time to suit the client, Thompson Transport offer temperature controlled distribution solutions to the food industry, from single pallets through to full loads, in the UK and throughout Europe, utilising its own vehicles or via its trade partners. The company also offers specialist services tailored to individual client requirements: for example, transporting racing pigeons throughout the UK and Europe.

Managed by a team of professionals with many years experience in road haulage, Thompson Transport is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is proud of its ability to provide the client with direct contact to a senior member of the management team, ensuring a professional, value-added, cost-effective and friendly response every single time.
