From running a piggery to owning a prize-winning business has been the path that Patrick Meere has taken in the Co Clare town of Ennis.

He began making his products on the corner of Abbey Street in Ennis, opposite the Queen’s Hotel. Before eventually moving to Quin Co Clare.
Unlike many other fledgling businesses, Meere’s did not seek to spread its wings into a wide range of products but, instead, chose to concentrate on what it did best. Today, the range includes round and square black pudding, white pudding and sausages.

Sales and Marketing Manager Barry Rees says: “Our pork square pudding is quite unique in Ireland and, in 2005, we launched Meere’s black and white chubbs/sticks of pudding. We still make it in the traditional way in tins and then steam it. One of the secrets of our success is the spices that we use, with different ones being used for each product. We have our regular sausages and then we have our competitive brand – the Banner Banger – with its price flashed on the packet. We also make home-made sausages and puddings for particular customers, such as The Kettle Of Fish chip shop in Gort and Galway.”

Today, Meere’s supplies deli counters, hotels, chip shops and butchers right across Co Clare. They also supply Tesco stores in Ennis, Kilrush, Coonagh Cross and Oranmore in Co Galway, together with Dunn’s Stores in Ennis, Shannon and Jetland.

Barry explains: “It is interesting that our white pudding is more popular in and around Dublin while down here people prefer the traditional black pudding. Quality is important to us and we were one of the first companies in Ireland to pass the HACCP regulations that allow us to import and export within the EU. Business is tough but, particularly with our Banner Bangers, we are more than holding our own.”
